Clara attended Hastings Law School and she practiced law in San Jose, San Francisco, and San Diego and was the first woman Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles. Clara practiced law continuously for fifty years and was a trial lawyer. Drawing on her own experience as a woman lawyer, Clara Foltz conceived of the public defender. Attorney Foltz died in 1934 at the age of 85.
